The profession
Who is the Neuro and Psychomotor Therapist for Developmental Age?
The Neuro and Psychomotor Therapist for Developmental Age (TNPEE) is a healthcare professional specialising in preventive, habilitative, and rehabilitative intervention across the neonatal, early childhood, paediatric, and adolescent stages. In Italy, the profession is recognised and regulated by Ministerial Decree No. 56 of 17 January 1997, and requires a specific qualifying degree and registration with the professional register.
Their practice is grounded in an integrated view of development and covers the following areas:
Using specific tools — clinical observation, play, movement, and therapeutic relationship — the TNPEE supports the acquisition and integration of developmental competencies, adapting each intervention to the individual child's characteristics and needs.
The aim is to promote harmonious neuro-psychomotor development and reduce the impact of any difficulties that arise.
Intervention is always personalised, dynamic, and relationship-centred, with particular attention to play as the primary therapeutic tool. It goes beyond rehabilitation to include developmental promotion and prevention, addressing both the child and their family and school environment.
